sewing machine mini

The other day, as I was cleaning out my studio, I came across this paper pieced block from years ago. And, since I still liked it, and decided it was high time I turned it into something useful (a mat or a mini mini quilt of sorts) .

Once I had a plan, I wasted no time. I basted this little block, did my absolute favorite straight line quilting, and used this pretty polka dotty fabric for the binding.

All finished, yay :).

I love how it turned out. It will be a nice addition to my studio for sure.

And now I'm curious. What do you do with your orphan blocks? Do tell.

  1. i used a bunch of my orphan blocks to make a really big and cozy couch quilt! i love this quilt to the moon and back and am so glad i had tried new patterns/ideas to end up with orphan blocks so i could make this one of a kind, colorful, very much "me" quilt. :) i also will sometimes make tote bags and use orphan blocks (esp. epp blocks) on them are decoration or as a part of the bag itself. i love your pieced sewing machine, by the way!

  2. I have quite a few floating around, but haven't managed to figure out what to do with them. I think about making them into something like a pillow from time to time, but so far I've had no follow through!

  3. Every once in a while I pull the orphans out of the time out box, admire them, then box them up again.

  5. Mine orphans remain orphans I'm afraid! Your sewing machine block was too cute to stay hidden away!

  6. Now that is adorable! Sometimes I cut up orphan blocks and turn them into something different. I recently grabbed a stack and thought I should whip up a quick quilt...which turned in to making another huge stack...there is no such thing as a quick quilt using stray blocks for me!

  7. I keep my orphans in a plastic bin and go to it when I need a gift or a new potholder or mitt - they don't stay orphaned for too long!

  8. Some I've turned into a bag, but I do need to tackle them! How I just love this! Is it your own pattern?

  9. So glad this isn't languishing unfinished anymore - it is fantastic!! I haven't got too many orphan blocks and those I do have are destined for a Project Linus quilt.

  14. They tend to become cushions or sometimes part of a pouche/bag. x
