grocery bags

Hello, hope everyone's weekend is off to a great start. I'm so happy to say that after a week of dreadfully gloomy cold and rainy weather the sun showed up this morning and it feels glorious!!!!

So, to my children's dismay, I decided this was a perfect day to clean the house, and I mean really clean, everything top to bottom :) We're about half way done now but I gave everyone a short break and decided to pop in to show you what I've been working on over the last few days.

Ta-da!!! Grocery bags! Very glamorous, right?

See, Chicago is on a brink of banning plastic bags in stores and it was just the right push I needed to finally make myself a few of these fantastic reusable bags. I used Michelle's Grocery Bag pattern . It is such a perfectly perfect pattern.

I love the shape of the bag, it's exactly like the plastic bag at the store, and it's so quick to make. I love how there's no boxing up the bottom, so it saves tons of time, yet it's a wonderfully roomy bag.

At first I was slightly reluctant to use some of my "prettier" fabrics for these bags, but I decided since I'll be using them on a regular basis it totally made sense to choose fabrics I really like.

Now I'm seriously looking forward to going grocery shopping :)

Tell me, are you using reusable grocery bags? Do you have a certain go to pattern you like to make?

Off I go now, more cleaning to be done, and then grocery shopping - yay! Svetlana

  3. These are so pretty! Plastic bags are not banned here but if you want one from the shop you have to pay for it! Most people now bring reusable shopping bags with them. Jxo

  4. I've been using my bags also made from Michelle's pattern for a couple of years. I prefer the bags made with a layer of canvas and a quilting fabric and then I use two layers of denim and interfacing for the handles.

  5. how much fabric we need for every grocery bag, Svetlana ? I though this is a good idea for 'teacher appreciation's week' simple gift :)

  6. Cute bags!! I have made a bunch of these, and every single time I use them, someone comments on my pretty bags. Every single time. They really are awesome, and I agree...it is a perfectly perfect pattern!

  9. I have about 10 of these exact bags I use almost exclusively for my shopping and I love them! Like you, I make them from pretty fabric since I use them so much.

  10. Love these! I have some Jane Market totes that I made a while back but I don't particularly love them, so I have had these on the to do list for a while I just haven't actually made them yet :) I do love using reusable bags, but I mostly use ones that I bought at Trader Joe's :)

  11. these look great and so much better than the plastic, here in the UK we are going to have to pay for the plastic ones so I will check out the tutorial and have a go, have been buying the "bags for life" from the supermarkets but they do not last long.

  13. Lovely bags! I make mine with left- to--right handles rather than back-to-front handles , but I have only used boring fabrics. - you've inspired me to make some pretty ones!

  15. Reusable bags have been manatory for several years in our province, Ontario. But when we moved into our house 25yrs ago a local grocery chain was selling cloth bags. I bought s few and have never looked back. I still have a couple of the original bags but all the stores sell reusable bags cheaply so they multiply. I also use plastic bins that come with webbing handles Looooove them too. Your bags are so fresh and fun. Keep them in the car at all times , you never know when you'll be stopping at the store.

  16. Oh I have to make these! I would love to have a few for the farmers market. I use the really big reusable bags from Joann's for the grocery store. I always see a new one I love everytime I go in there. They had two different owl ones last week!

  17. They're so cute! We haven't used plastic bags for years, only canvas ones. I bought from LL BEAN several of their totes that work a treat, but they're not nearly as cute as yours :)

  18. How pretty! I use reusable bags, but mine are just purchased from the grocery store. Nothing fancy! These would make grocery shopping that much more fun =)

  20. I made everyone clean house last weekend, too. I wasn't very popular. But it feels good to have a little less clutter and a little more order.

We use re-usable bags, as our grocery store doesn't provide them. I have several that we received when we bought our van at a dealership several years ago and they are still going strong. Thankfully our van is, as well! :) I have made one or two but have them on my "to-make" list. And I am going to make myself use pretty new fabric. Even if it hurts! :)

  21. Loved your bags so much that I went home and made one and cut out a few others - gorgeous and fun! I lined mine with a heavy waffle weaved muslin and that worked too. Thanks, as usual, for your brilliance!

  22. I hope this isn't a dumb question but how did you get the black and white strip fabric on the side of the bag. I just bought the pattern and it shows using one solid fabric. I'm assuming it was pieced but what dimensions were used?

  23. My State of South Australia was one of the first places in the world to ban the use of flimsy plastic bags in supermarkets, about eight years ago. I've never had the inclination to make my own shopping bags though, so use the store ones. Yours look very pretty and so much classier than mine!
