more placemats

My quilting mojo seems to have left me for the moment :( I was sure I'd make quite a few Scrappy Delight blocks for my son's quilt over the weekend but I simply did not feel like it. Instead, I did some small project sewing and quilting. Nothing too fancy or complicated, though.

I decided to cut into this lovely cheater print by Suzuko Koseki and make some placemats for our new dining room table.

I've been thinking about my quilting and use of color for quite some time and one thing I'd really like to concentrate on is using deeper, saturated colors more. It doesn't come easy to me, I must say, so using this mustardy yellow for the binding was a small step in that direction. Plus, there's some BROWN in Suzuko's print. I'm learning to embrace brown, too.

Do you have certain go to colors? Or some you tend to avoid? Do tell.

  1. They look great....I have just the opposite problem, I always want to use every colour in the rainbow. I need to learn to edit and lower the volume now and again.

  2. These are wonderful. I tend to shy away from orange and yellow... but they sneak in every now and again.

  3. Beautiful placemats. I think I am too all over the place with colors I choose. I did notice recently while selecting fabrics for a quilt from my stash that the only light fabrics I had were polka dots.

  5. Your placemats are really nice! I don't like green or brown so it is rare that I use either color. Green as an accent color from time to time but never brown.

  6. I need some new placemats, too!!

These colors are right down my alley. I'm not a pastel or bright, vibrant color type of gal. I am drawn to quiet, earthy colors. Love the mustard color binding with the gray :)

  7. oh these are great! I definitely go to green and gray and orange. Not so much pink or yellow...I do love brown too though & have been collecting a yet-to-be-decided quilt!

  8. Great idea, love how these turned out. I tend to go for white backgrounds, so I'm trying to embrace different neutrals instead

  9. I usually like deep, saturated colours. I just made a peach / yellow / white quilt for a friend and it was a challenge for me.

  10. These are gorgeous! I love the mustard binding, it's one of my favorite colors. I have a hard time using green, it's not my favorite color. On the other hand, I have a hard time making something without using pink. I never knew how much I liked pink until I started quilting!

  11. The placemats look fantastic! I do not like brown/beige and until recently stayed clear of green's as well, but I am finding some of the new shades of green quite endearing :)

  12. They look wonderful Svetlana. I really am not drawn to greens at all. Browns somewhat, but everything else is usually fair game for me.

  13. I am the opposite to you. I use deep colours all the time. It is such an effort to lighten things up!!!

  15. Fantastic placemats! I find that I don't use much purple...or brown for some reason. Not that I am opposed to them...I just don't choose them very often.

  18. Interesting! I often think you use very "vibrant" colors, but I suppose that's different than deep and saturated. I'm not really sure what the difference is, which I probably why I feel lost when it comes to picking colors. Someone whose quilts I really like is Lori Holt. She uses brown and gray a lot which I never actually noticed. I always thought her quilts were so colorful and then I started noticing how she uses neutral colors. Not enough to understand it, mind you, but at least I've noticed! I have to tell you that Denyse Schmidt has more lines at Joann's. Maybe you already know, but I was really surprised when I looked online. There is one fabric that I really like that's black and white, and I think it's called abstract leaves or something like that. I wonder how she designs such amazing fabrics. I'm always in wonder at how some look modern but as a whole they have a traditional sentiment that I like. It's the perfect meld between repro and modern. I just love it! I saw her new line Florence in a lot of Market posts. I think if I never bought any fabric again except hers I'd be happy.

  23. Oh I love brown! Is that a bad thing?:-) Sometimes it takes a fun little project like these great placemats to bring you out of your quilting funk. I'm super deep in that funk these days, maybe I should whip up some pillows or something!!! My go to color?- always changing and depends on my mood...... aaahhh the beauty of ALL colors.

  24. I'm good with all the earth tones, but I am pretty sure, if you searched, you couldn't find (much) purple in my stash.
