restraint

Hello, happy Sunday.

How is your weekend going? I hope it's going well and you have time to relax and take it easy. That's pretty much what we're doing these days, staying home, taking it easy, trying to get over this nasty flu/ cold/ cough that's been going around. And, we're also wishing very, very hard for spring to finally show up.

Staying at home, of course, means some sewing time. Nothing huge, just a few small projects here and there.

This patchwork pouch was such a great exercise in restraint. As you know, I usually go all out and make very colorful things, so this time I limited myself to pink, yellow, and black/ gray. And white, of course.

I must say, this was fun! I should do things like that more often. Plus, I really like this color combo and I'm thinking it would make for a wonderful baby girl quilt. But first I have to get some more pinks in my stash.

Oh, but when it came to the zipper all the restraint went out the window and I had to go with this bright turquoise one. I love how it contrasts and complements the patchwork all at the same time.

So, I've been wondering. Do you have your favorite go to colors or do you like to mix things up. Do tell.

  1. Very pretty! It depends what I'm making and who it is for so I don't think I have any go to colours! I might work on that ;)

  2. Love your colours together! At the moment I'm really liking black, grey, white and orange combined.

  3. I try to be restrained. The first time I did it I ended up with the brightest thing i had ever made!! Am slowly learning how to have restraint with colour but maybe it just isn't in my nature!! Your dumplings inspired me and now I have made some. Thanks so much for that post.

  4. Oh I still think this is beautifully colourful and very 'you'

Go to colours? Well not pink usually (although I've just finished a Madrona Road quilt top that was loaded with pink on one side!) Most of the things I've made have gone elsewhere, so have tended towards their colour choices really (I even embraced brown for my gran)

  5. This is so cute and looks very "Svetlana," despite the narrow palette.

  7. I think making things like this can make you realise what colours are missing from your stash. I have very little pink in mine for example.

  8. I tend to coordinate most of the time but I really should throw caution to the wind more often I think, because I love the look of a bit more contrast.

but I laughed a t"need to get more pinks" -- I went a little crazy when my daughter was born... definitely not lacking in pink here! :)

  14. Cute pouch S & great colour combo! I'm more often making for others and their colour choices, but if I had to choose it would probably be an ecclectic mix of colours! Jxo

  15. I tend to be 'controlled' in my choice of color and design. Though I'm trying to stretch outside of my box. 'Go to' colors are cool OR gray OR orange. Go figure...

  16. Stunning! I love the colors you chose, and that blue zip is divine. I'm not sure if I have go-to colors, I think I'm pretty random and all over the place, usually.

  18. Feel better!!

For things for me, I tend to stick just to my favourites. Which is why it's nice to make things for other people. If I didn't, my entire fabric stash would probably be blues, oranges, greys and other neutrals. And that's about it.

  19. Joj, Svetlanko, tak to jsi se opravdu drzela zkratka! :) Vybrala jsi krasne barvy a nadherne latky a vysledek je opravdu moc krasny! Mas i pravdu, ze takove detska deka by byla paradni :)
    Mej krasne dny, Jola

PS: co jsem si trosku obohatila svou zasobu latek... mam problem se udrzet v mixovani barev a vzoru :) Je to hra a bavi me to :)

  20. I just used a bright turquoise zipper on my gray and cream pouch. Turquoise is definitely a go-to color when I'm sewing for myself!

  21. Ooh love the colour combo!

I think sometimes we can produce something more striking with a narrower colour palette and I do like to try different ones out. Green seems to want to find its way into most of my quilts I have to say - but there is a lot of combinations possible with green!

  22. It looks like you have a binding where the zipper attaches. How did you do that?
