the spools {finished}

I finished my Spools quilt and I could not be happier with how it turned out.

This quilt is a mix of two Denyse Schmidt quilts. First one, the top, is based on her Spools quilt.

Here it is, all ready for the basting stage, yay! I totally, totally love the way all these improv blocks look. Oh, and the color palette might be my very favorite color combo ever. It's just so fresh, and pretty, and summery. Yum!!!

I used a beach blanket in Denyse's book Denyse Schmidt quilts as an inspiration for the back of my quilt. I joined Kona Robin Egg and Kona Lemon together using some washi fabric in coal as well as Kona Orange. I must say, I think this is a perfect way to make a quilt backing. It's interesting and pretty, yet I din't have to spend hours working on another "quilt top" for the back.

I quilted it in a grid pattern. It meant a lot of tedious straight lines but I do love the final look, so it was definitely worth it.

I totally surprised myself when it came to choosing a binding. I usually go for a darker fabric to sort of frame the whole quilt. I actually planned on using my favorite washi fabric in coal but changed my mind in the very last minute and I went with Kona Ash. I'm really glad I did, too. I think it complements the quilt so nicely.

Finished size of this quilt is 80" x 88", perfect size for our bed. Here I am, standing on the stool, trying to hold the beast up for the picture. Oh, it's HEAVY!!!

I'm submitting this quilt to
Link up your entry starting June 10!

Hope you all have a wonderful Father's Day weekend. Svetlana

  25. I love your quilts. A question please: what batting do you use? and how do you get all that fabric on your machine? do you have a long-arm machine as well? Or do strips and sew them together after they are quilted(what I do)? I'm at cocos.loft@gmail.com - thanks!
