tangerine orange and white zig zag quilt

I don't know about you, but I was not that thrilled with Pantone's color for the year 2012 Tangerine Orange. I do like orange and like to pair it with grey and blue or green, but Pantone's shade seemed just a little too dark of an orange for me.

Lately, many fun and wonderfully creative quilts using tangerine orange started popping up all around the blogland . That got me thinking that maybe, just maybe I could give this color a try. I ordered Kona tangerine (for some reason I wanted to work with a solid color, no pattern) and this is what I came up with.

I decided to go simple and bold. I paired tangerine orange with white to achieve a crisp, modern look and I thought zig zags was just the right pattern for this color combo.

I used flannel in these pretty aqua and green daisies for the backing. I think they contrast the boldness of the zig zag very well.

I echo quilted around the zig zags, using white thread on white and orange on orange.

I finished the whole quilt  off using Kona slate for the binding. I do like how this quilt turned out. Definitely not the color I would have reached for as my first choice, but it was nice to get out of the box and try something new. How about you? Did you give tangerine orange a try? Are you going to? What 's your feeling about this saturated shade of orange?

  1. Oooh, how cool! It's definitely growing on me, but not sure I could do an entirely orange quilt...

  2. It's a beauty! I adore zig-zags and using solids only for this makes it all the more gorgeous, Svetlana.

I'm currently in the midst of working on a couple of quilts using this colour. Orange happens to be my hubby's favourite colour, so I thought I'd make him a quilt of his own using it. Then the leftovers called to me, so now I've got a second orange quilt on the go. The colour is winning me over. Hard to beat the energy and happy feeling this colour creates!

  4. I love your zig-zag quilt. I find the orange beautiful. I don't know why, but to me, orange is a "healthy" colour. So vibrant... really like it.

  11. Orange isn´t one of my favorite colours but its growing on me. For this bright (almost traffic cone) coloured orange I think that the pattern is absolutely perfekt! It really is like a bold statment.
    Congrats to a wounderful quilt!

  16. I just got some Kona Schoolbus which I love - I guess it's not as bright as tangerine but I do love orange!! Your quilt is fantastic and I love it with the white - the zigzags are perfect :)

  17. Your quilt is beautiful! Great choice for the binding and the backing. Orange is a color I almost never use. Somehow, on my last trip to the fabric store, I was compelled to buy 3 meters of it! And this was before I even heard of the 'color of the year'. The 2 quilts that i made that showcased orange, garnered the best reactions. Go figure!

I noticed your part of the 'fugly' fabric giveaway too, I am as well :D I have a bunch of Tanya Whelan fat quarters up for grabs if you're interested?
