a little makeover

A few years back I used to be obsessed with home decorating. I watched hours and hours of HGTV, painted, re-painted, decorated, and re-decorating our house many, many times. Then one day I ditched my  home decorating addiction and replaced it with sewing addiction instead. I know, I'm all about balance here :)

Well, the other day the girls and I walked into our local Savers store and my old addiction kicked in as soon as my eyes rested on this "previously well loved", rather dingy looking display shelf.

Quite ugly, isn't it? Well, I thought it had a potential so I brought it home and got to work.

I took it all apart, cleaned, sanded, turned my backyard into an impromptu painting studio, and spray painted all the parts. I won't lie. I did not enjoy the process. The whole time I kept thinking sewing is so much more fun.

I kept at it, however, and today I managed to put the whole thing back together.

Not bad, is it? I even used a piece of my most favorite Heather Ross strawberries print to brighten the whole display up. I do like the way this little shelf turned out, but next time I'm definitely skipping a trip to the charity shop and heading for a fabric store instead.

And, just for the sake of it - the before and after picture.

So, tell me. Do you ever "stray" from your preferred craft? Do you enjoy it, or like me, you can't wait to get back to what you love best?

Thanks so much for reading. Svetlana

  1. I have dabbled in many other crafty things but most things get abandoned quickly in favor of my sewing machine :). I do LOVE how your shelf turned out though!

  2. I have been forced to stray from sewing recently, due to my sewing machine needing repairs. I did some beading, finished up some long awaited hand sewing and did a little paper crafts. Needless to say my machine is back and working now, so all other activities will probably stop.

  5. Fabulous makeover S! Like you I love transforming furniture, but I prefer the end results to the actual makeover process. I'd much prefer to get someone else to do the messy work for me!! Jxo

  6. Love your makeover! I have several projects that could do with a spray paint but I'm too busy sewing to get around to them! I would much rather sew than paint!

  9. I love it. I love the background fabric. You transformed it beautifully. You have reminded me that I have an ugly wooden goose with a wooden basket attached in my garage that I bought at a thrift shop almost two years. Someday I will get to giving it some love. I have to say that my love for sewing clothes, quilting,cross-stitch, and knitting are all pretty equal. Usually I'll get really maybe obsessively into one for a while (I know all about balance too)but then I will take a break and switch to a different one. I have been doing a lot of clothes for my kids lately and I am ready to get back to patchwork and quilting.

  11. I have more than one craft, I am always knitting too, and I garden a lot too which is not a craft but whatever. The little shelf is very cute!

  12. Nice makeover! You used fabric so its not too "off" of your normal craft ::wink:: I love the HR strawberries as a backing. What did you use to adhere it?

  13. You did a very nice job. I tend to obsess about one thing at a time. I used to cross-stitch ALL the time, then I moved to knitting for quite a few years, and now quilting/sewing. I think this one is going to "stick"!

  14. That is so cute, and I must admit, I didn't quite see its full potential. Good thing you did!

I was exactly the same way about home decorating (pre sewing obsession). I subscribed to about 20 magazines, including Home, Traditional Home, Country Home, Country Living, Martha Stewart Living, Cottage Living, Southern Living, Coastal Living -- I am not even joking, there were more. House & Garden, Better Homes & Gardens. LOL. After that I moved on to baking and did that obsessively for about a year.

P.S. That is my fav Briar Rose print too!

  15. Oh, Svetlana....this is so precious! You did a wonderful job. I am so glad that you kept going until it was completed. I have several projects that need to be done around here, I just can't put aside my sewing. Honestly!

  16. Love your transformation on the little unit! Hope you don't burn yourself out on the quilting like you did on the home décor :)

  17. Woo hoo! What a great makeover! Thank goodness you had a good vision for this previously loved shelf - it looks just great! I have three seed boxes I'm currently sanding and re-painting to use as displays in the shop. It's been a fun learning curve for me (first time!!!) but I will happily return to sewing when they're done. Blog post to come...next week?

  18. Love it! I am currently diverted carving stamps from erasers! Totally smitten but hoping to stamp fabric and make cute pouches, totes and the like - so an off-shoot rather than a new direction!

  20. Very cute! But, that curio would make an excellent cabinet in your sewing room for thread! I use a spice rack for my thread. Has a door and I can close it up!

  21. I've been putting off re-doing a shelf thingy that a friend gave me. But after seeing your backyard I am going to get busy and do it!! I think using a big box as a painting stand is brilliant!!! Thanks for the inspiration. Now back to quilting......

  22. Those strawberries in the background are perfect! What a nice touch for a beautiful project.

  23. Very very cute transformation! I feel like my 'littles' are a stray from my quilting, but I love them both!

  24. I "stray" often... sometimes for weeks at a time! Guess I'm kind of an all or nothing person - sometimes I just get on reading kicks too in addition to home DIY or crafty projects. Your project turned out so cute!

  25. Very cute :o) Hmm, I do loads of different things, although mostly sewing these days. I suppose a little dalliance with jewellery making recently is about it...

  26. What an amazing makeover! This would be perfect in a little girl's room to hold "treasures."

  27. Ps I try not to get involved too much in other hobbies because then there is no time for sewing. I even avoid books so I don't get caught up in the story and skip sewing.

  28. I love quilting but I'm also filled with desire to do non quilting sewing projects. MUST walk before I can run. Must. Lol

  29. lovely makeover, Svetlana! I knit and crochet occasionally, but quilting is my thing, where I'm in my crafty happy zone :)

  30. Last November I had a major decorating binge. I'm pretty much over it now except for some little projects, which mostly involve my sewing room. This is really cute, especially with the HR print in the back against the white!

  31. That turned out so pretty! And I love the fabric background. What a lucky find. I have occasional forays into home decorating projects, crochet, cards, even jewelry, but like you, sewing and quilting are my passions.

  32. I sometimes stray to cook or screenprint or whatever, BUT I feel often that i stray from quilting to sew other things especially kids clothing! I have really missed quilting lately because of all the other things that have been cluttering up my list of things to make, but oh so soon I will get back to it! Lovely work on the shelf BTW, really pretty :)

  33. The work was worth doing it. It looks great. I "stray", too. 'Though by now I'm mostly sewing. There's so much to do.

  34. Yes, but I generally hate it and wish I was sewing. The revamp turned out really well.

  35. Oh so sweet! Your fabric selection is perfect for this project!!
