Just like so many of you, I own and use two sewing machines. Helen (Juki TL-2000), my beautiful workhorse of a machine, gets used pretty much every day. My second machine, Jane (a much smaller Janome HD-1000), only sees action on special occasions when a zig zag stitch is needed.
Now, even though I don't use Jane that often, I still like to keep her on my sewing table as I absolutely hate setting up a machine when I'm in the middle of a project. Which means she gets very dusty, of course. And dust, as we all know, is a silent killer of our machines, right :)?
So, the other day I finally decided it was time I made Jane a lovely new "coat" to keep her all cozy and dust free. I scoured Pinterest and blogs for sewing machine cover tutorials and finally decided to follow this one.
The tutorial was super easy to follow, it even included pattern pieces all ready for printing. And even though the pattern was designed with a different machine in mind, I only needed to do very minor changes to make sure it fit Jane well. Plus, I really liked their addition of piping (I used a regular store bought one) and use of Flex Foam to make the cover nice and sturdy.
I worried a little about how to properly attach piping and the thickness of the seams. Thanks to using a gazillion pins for piping and Wonder Clips to hold panels together though, things went together surprisingly well.
Oh, and the cover is fully lined. Which is a nice thing as I quite dislike raw seams no matter whether I can see them or not. All in all, this was a pretty fun, very useful project and I'm happy I can finally check Jane's new coat off my to do list :).

ReplyDeleteI don't have a cover, but I'm notoriously messy. I bought fabric years ago to make a cover, but didn't do it. I'm pretty sure that if I made one, it would end up tossed in the corner :)

ReplyDeleteI made a sewing machine cover for my first machine ( a Brother) years ago! I still use it on my Juki so its not a perfect fit. I should make a lovely new one like yours but I am not sure where I would buy Flex Foam here in Australia. I think I need to do some investigating...thanks for the link to the tutorial!

ReplyDeleteAnd YES I keep all my machines covered. The one that is used nearly every day (My Juki) gets covered every night. Unfortunately the cover does cover the sewing table attached, just the machine....
I don't cover mine either. I want to have her ready for when I have free time.
ReplyDeleteAll my machines have covers, quilted ones for storage and thinner ones for the ones that are in use. I have to rotate them as I have 4 plus an embroidery machine and an overlocker. It sounds greedy but I have them set up for specific jobs which means that I can sew when ever a window of time pops up.

ReplyDeleteLove that cover. made two for my machines. Customers at my quilt shop loved it too. We had a class with a few additions, like zippered pocket, to learn new techniques.
ReplyDeleteIt was one of the first thing I made when I got my first sewing machine last year for my birthday. I use it all the time. My husband liked it so much, he had me make a cover for the coffee machine. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't use a cover, but I'm thinking it's time I did. I've been given a 1950s sewing machine (made in Toronto ), which is heavy, but has the strength to go through layers of heavy fabrics that I've found my modern machine can't do. So...two covers, I think!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I use the bottom cut off of a clear outside garbage bag to cover my machine. It does save her from the dust, but she deserves better. I think I'd like to find a pattern with a machine applique, and maybe quilted. It would be a good small project to try new techniques on.

ReplyDeleteI'd love to see you use fabric printed on a Gelli plate or D.I.Y gelatin plate. I've done it on paper, but not on fabric yet. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI keep just one machine up at a time and it is often uncovered. Two are in travel bags, covered and the other 6 or so are covered with original cases or covers.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had seen how you made your cover... I desin d mine to tie on the sides, which works perfectly but I do love the idea of having pockets!! Can one have too many sewing machine covers? Lol
ReplyDeleteNice cover! Really love that Zen Chic fabric. I almost never cover my sewing machine because I use it so much but if I'm going on a long trip, I cover it with the Janome slipcover that came with the machine.

ReplyDeleteI have mine covered by the box it came in. I took the time to paint it which makes it look moderately attractive but your cover looks very good. This is probably the best design for a sewing machine cover I've seen. I will put it on my to-do list.

ReplyDeleteI am wanting to buy a new sewing machine and would like your advise. I need something for piecing, quilting, bag making, etc. Basically, what you do, but on a much smaller basis! I am considering the Janome 3000 or the Juki 2000 like you have. Is the Juki worth the extra $225 or do you think I would be good with the Janome?
