I finished my Scrap Eater quilt. Fun, isn't it? And just like the name suggests I only used scraps to make this quilt top.
I used this wonderful tutorial to make my blocks (they each finished at 12" x 12") and I absolutely love that even though I used scraps of every size and color, the finished quilt still looks cohesive - well, sort of crazily cohesive but I think it works :)
Here it is during basting stage. Oh, I do love a perfectly flat, zero wrinkles, freshly basted quilt top very much indeed.
My plan at first was to do an all over spiral quilting like I did on this quilt a while back. After just a few minutes of pretty poor quilting and wrestling this beast I decided to scrap that plan and rip out all the stitches ... plan b, continuous eights to the rescue :)
My eights are about 4" tall and I was happy to see that even after washing and drying this quilt stayed pretty flat. Last time I tried this quilting pattern I made my eights smaller and a lot denser which probably caused the quilt to crinkle up more than I'd prefer.
I used this beautiful lime (and blue) giant dots Marimekko fabric for the backing. And since I live close to Crate and Barrel outlet store I bought it at an incredible sale price of $3.98 a yard !!!!
I couldn't choose just one fabric for the binding so I copied my quilting hero Amanda Jean and went scrappy. I think it adds just the right finishing touch.
The quilt finished at 72" x 72". And yes, I still have tons of scraps left over, but on that next time :)
Wishing you all a very lovely weekend. Svetlana

wow this is a great quilt! i just love it! all the little prints you used would be great fun to search and pick out.
ReplyDeleteI love how this quilt turned out.Scrappy binding was definitely the way to go. Thanks for sharing the tutorial. This looks like a fun way to use some of my scraps that are too small from recent quilt finishes to make a pillow to coordinate etc.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's fabulous. You're my quilt hero!
ReplyDeleteYou are right - it absolutely works in every respect and there is cohesiveness in the scrappiness. Love the backing and binding too.
ReplyDeleteLove the crazy cohesiveness of this quilt. I too love scrappy bindings.
ReplyDeleteI love how it all works together!! Great finish!
ReplyDeleteWonderful again! I love the scrappiness...another happy quilt.😁
ReplyDeleteLovely! Admittedly, I often am not a fan of scrappy quilts (there can be just too much going on!). I really like your approach here, though, with the 12-by-12 blocks, the repetition of certain fabrics and colors, and the chunks of neutral-ish fabrics to give the viewer a break. Amanda Jean would be proud. : )
ReplyDeleteI have recently decided to use up some scraps myself. I made a quilt that I figured would deplete my box. It didn't even make a dent. Then I made a bigger quilt and the box still looked full. Then I made a bag. The box was still full. Then i made a tiny string quilt and a throw sized string quilt. During this time a friend got interested in my scrap projects so I gave the box to her. Since then, I have started a new box and I am almost done with another quilt top from that box. It is astounding how far scraps go when it feels like you need so much yardage when you use new fabric. I love your technique on this one. I see this in my future. Here's to a never ending scrap supply!

ReplyDeleteMy goodness this a a beautiful quilt. I'm usually not much for scrappy quilts but after seeing yours I think this scrappy improv pattern will go on my bucket list. Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour extra crinkles can be caused by a particular batting as well as how much your fabric shrinks. If you prefer less crinkles follow the prewash instructions for the batting you are using. If you can't find the instructions on the package you can almost always find them on the manufacture's website. And if you are a real fanatic about crinkles (I hate to say this) then I suggest prewashing your fabrics. Eek!! There, I said it and lightening didn't strike but I'm still holding my breath. lol The last thing in this world I would ever do again is prewash my fabrics. :( So, just a little food for thought. Once again.....your quilt is wonderful!!!!!!!!
I love this quilt!! The backing fabric is so cool. Scrap quilts are my favorite. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis really is a great scrap buster and I often use a scrappy binding myself too. x
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect! Thank you for the tutorial tip!
ReplyDeleteI love the name too!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic quilt! I like the figure 8 quilting you did on it. The name is cute too! Even though you have scraps left over I bet this quilt at least made a dent in them.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing - I am determined to make one of these with all my scraps!
ReplyDeleteI love it!

ReplyDeleteSpectacular! So fresh and it shows there is beauty in the leftovers. Just so fun!
ReplyDeleteYay! :-) I was so looking forward to seeing the finished quilt and am not disappointed! I love it! And Marimekko fabric at that price??? Lucky find! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am a big believer in using up scraps, you would be surprised the small pieces i keep for applique. its is stunning.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing your first post I pulled out a bag of scraps and began to sew :) I Tried really hard to not be toooo picky about what fabrics went with what. What ever I pulled out of the bag got added on. Wondering if mine will be as pretty as yours but I will continue on. It is a new process for me. I'm anxious to see how it all turns out. Love your finished quilt. Thanks for the inspiration. Janita
