my new color explosion wip

I've started working on a new project this afternoon and I'm totally in love. Want to see? Ta-daaa!!!

I found this poster on Pinterest a while ago and I thought right away that all these gorgeous colors would look marvelous in a quilt. So, this afternoon, I got all my solids together

and started cutting.

Surprisingly, it did not take that long to cut all these triangles, or maybe I was just enjoying myself too much and did not even realize how much work it really was.

And then it was off to my design wall ( it did look pretty sad and lonely the last couple of days since I finished my granny blocks - but on that later this week).

First, it looked like this

I kept adding more,

and more, until it looks like this.

I still have more triangles to add and I'm sure I'll be reshuffling some others, as well. I don't even know what it's going to be, maybe a wall hanging, or another pillow, or a mini quilt, no idea so far. I'll see how big, or small it will turn out to be after I sew all these 2.5" triangles together.

For now, I'm just really excited to be working with this mix of beautiful colors. It brightens my mood just looking at it. And who knew that solids could be so exciting? Not me, that's for sure. I have always preferred pattern fabric over solids. This project is definitely helping me to appreciate solids as stars, not just supporting actors. How about you? Do you prefer patterns or solids?

  2. It looks AWESOME! Are you just sticking them up randomly so far? It looks great just as is.

I have used solids very little on their own. Lots as backgrounds of course, but still it's the prints that shine. I do love how solids projects look though. Maybe I should branch out and try one too!

  5. Love the riot of colour here interspersed with the greys. I gained a whole new appreciation of exactly what you can do with them when working on my items for the For The Love Of Solids swap recently, you should check out the Flickr group, there's some awesome solid only projects in there!

  12. Beautiful sharp colours! I admit, I have a fondness for patterns, but especially patterns that read as solids. But I'm starting to get into solids now - I just don't have much money, so I don't have many solids right now...

  18. This is so fabulous! You'll have to share with us all your tricks to getting them to line up straight once you sew them... I'm terrible at triangles, I need to work on them a bit more. :)

  21. It's gorgeous! I have found working with solids lately to be very invigorating. But, after about a month at it, I was ready to move on =) I'm sure I'll continue working with both, but probably with prints more often.
