Hello, happy Friday!
I hope you all are having a wonderful day so far. It's been a couple of very unusual days for us here in Chicago with temperatures reaching 80 degrees!!!!! As my son said - these are the best winter days ever! No complaints here, that's for sure.
Now on to the quilty matters. I finished my Hope Valley and Heirloom granny square quilt.
I took a very different approach from my previous scrappy granny quilt. I decided to use fabric from just two collections - Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt and Heirloom by Joel Dewberry. I liked them both very much and I think they look beautiful being used in the same quilt.
I decided to go bigger with my squares and instead of the original 2.5" squares I cut mine at 3.5". Somehow, I thought that a little bigger blocks would showcase these gorgeous prints better.
I quilted all around the blocks and a few straight lines around the border. I want this quilt to be nice and soft from the very beginning, so I chose not to do too much quilting.
I used Kona tangerine to bind the quilt. I think this bright and saturated orange is the perfect finishing touch.
Finished quilt is about 55" x 65" and it's ready for its long journey all the way to Europe.
And, just for fun, I wanted to show you both of my granny square quilts side by side. Isn't it fantastic that changing fabric and the scale of the block resulted in two quite different quilts?
Enjoy the rest of the day. Svetlana

I love both versions of your Granny Squares. Its funny how the bigger, less scrappy version seems stronger and more intense. It's probably both the size and the color choice. Either would be very welcome at my house. Great job, Svetlana!
ReplyDeleteThey are both very different and both beautiful. I really love the planned look with only 2 prints per block. I may have to try that after I finish my scrappy ones!
ReplyDeleteLove the bold choice of binding.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I have squares for 2 lap quilts made have not yet finished my tops though. I love your squares in both the quilts great job.

REALLY like this one. They're both great, but totally different looks.
ReplyDeleteI love them both! Just finished my top yesterday . Cheers
ReplyDeleteI like your fresh approach to the designs on your quilts, the tree, the circles, the books, etc. I like the way the orange is a total contrast to the grey grannies. I wish I was as focused as you on quilts, you must be so proud of your achievements.
ReplyDeleteI've just made a little owl, bee and frog cell phone covers for my daughters which they wear around their neck. I made an owl cover for myself to put my Tracfone SVC phone in which is especially for seniors who don't have such great eyesight. The keys and letters on the screen are bigger and I only pay $7/month for service.
Now my husband wants a kindle cover which I'm going to make out of orange and purple scraps. It'll bring out the oomph in him as he's young at heart.
Great combination of fabrics, love it!
ReplyDeleteOh Svetlana, this is so beautiful. I loved your first one, but I love this one too. It's so quietly stunning. Brilliant work!
ReplyDeleteThey are both beautiful. I love the Hope Valley and Joel Dewberry together, it looks fabulous, and I really like the way you have only used two fabrics per block.
ReplyDeleteSvetlana, both quilts look great, I have to put a granny square quilt on my to-do list.
ReplyDeleteWow, they both look so amazing, but the orange binding is my personal favorite. Are you going to make another?
ReplyDeleteLove this one. I'm going with a single line for my second and it's turning out so cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm envious of your 80 degree weather. Wish you could send it my way. I've just got rain, rain and more rain!
Wow, love them both! I have yet to do this block... I'm so inspired by yours!
ReplyDeleteit is amazing how well hope valley goes with soo many different lines of fabric! i love this one sooo much!
ReplyDeleteI like the new granny square quilt very much. I like both a lot. The one bright and cheery and the other one a little more subdued. I would choose both. I still have to try my first granny square but I chose some fabric so maybe soon I can try it out.
ReplyDeleteStunning, I love both of those lines and they do work really well together! Two gorgeous grannies!
ReplyDeleteOoh love both of them! What great fabric choices and I'm sure you could make it look different again...
ReplyDeletelove both of your quilts!
